Associate Scientist – Agricultural Economics

Reporting to an internationally recruited staff (IRS), the associate scientist will play a key role in ex ante and post impact assessment of IRRI research activities. The position depends upon knowledge and skills in agricultural economic theory, such as economic surplus analysis of research investments, as well as statistics. The successful candidate will analyze the anticipated future use and effects of research, as well as results of socioeconomic surveys of adoption and benefits derived from prior innovations.

Major accountabilities /responsibilities:

• Provide analytical support to the analysis of the achieved and expected economic, poverty, environmental, and food security impacts of IRRI research activities.
• Plan and design farm, industry and/or government surveys that will provide robust socioeconomic information necessary to assess the impact of a specified IRRI project (or suite of projects). Data collection methods could include semi-structured interviews and/or focus group discussions. Provide training and supervision to enumerators.
• Ensure that primary data collected are organized, validated, processed, and interpreted correctly for impact assessment and other strategic studies.
• Liaise with internal and external partners to procure, interpret, and organize secondary data relevant to the modeling of research impacts.
• Work with social science and biophysical colleagues to utilize collected data in established biological (crop growth and crop loss) and economic (trade) modeling environments.
• Write and present research papers at local and international seminars and conferences, workshops, and meetings and for publication in journals, in particular, portions of impact assessment and strategic studies using data collected and analyzed.
• Perform other job-related duties as instructed by the IRS or head of the division.

Qualification requirements:

• Post-graduate degree or equivalent in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or Statistics
• 3 years’ relevant experience
• Excellent oral and written English communication skills
• Proficiency in the use of economic and/or statistical analysis; advanced knowledge of economic concepts, including economic surplus analysis; skill in research management, training, and writing
